Indonesian Language Training Course For Foreign Diplomat

The Centre for Education and Training of the Department of Foreign Affairs is organizing an Indonesian language training courses for foreign diplomats for the fourth time under the title: the Promotion of Indonesian Language for Foreign Diplomats. Countries participating are Lao, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Fiji and Russia.

The training course will be conducted from 24th June to 19th September 2008 in Wisma Bahasa, a well-known Indonesian language-training institution in Yogyakarta, Central Java. Furthermore, the program will include not only language learning but also introduction to Indonesian culture. The participants will experience making batik, cooking, dancing, traditional handicrafts and tour to historical sites. The Secretary General of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Republic of Indonesia, in launching the program, has received the participants on June 24th 2008. On the occasion, The Secretary General conveyed Indonesia’s appreciation for participating in the program. The program is designed as a tool to understand the country and people of the region through training of Indonesian language and culture.

The program is an extension of participants of the Promotion of Indonesian Language for ASEAN+3 Diplomats which had been held annually since 2005. The first program was held in Yogyakarta on August 9th - October 20th 2005 and participated by 13 participants from 8 countries of ASEAN+3. The second program that was participated by 19 participants from 9 countries of ASEAN+3, was held on September 1st - November 30th 2006 in Bandung. The third program was held in Yogyakarta, on June 6th - August 31st 2007 and attended by 16 participants from 10 countries of ASEAN+3.

The program has three objectives, namely to ensure the proficiency of Asia Pacific foreign service officers in using and communicating Indonesian language; to enhance their capacity in interacting among themselves; to enhance the knowledge of the Asia Pacific countries of their common cultural norms as well as values; and to develop a sense of regional identity.

The practical approach of the language program, combined with the introduction to political, economic, social and cultural aspects, is expected to enhance mutual understanding among the future leaders of the region, and, thus as one of instruments in strengthening regional cooperation and people to people contact among the participants’ countries.
