We can find buildings from the colonial era in Indonesia in several places, such as forts. These historical constructions are mostly protected by the Indonesian government and have been designated as a cultural heritage. Check out some of the fortresses from the colonial era in several places in Indonesia:

  1. Fort Belgica

Fort Belgica was built by the Portuguese in 1622 in Banda Naira, Central Maluku, Maluku Province. This pentagon-shaped fort is capable of containing 30–40 soldiers guarding the defense area. In 2015, Fort Belgica was selected as a part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, specifically the Tentative List of the Historic and Marine Landscapes of the Banda Islands.

The name of this fort was taken from the name of the ruling Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies at that time, was L.P.J. Burggraaf du Bus de Gisignies. The Indonesian government, especially archaeologists, is still researching the relics of Fort Du Bus.

  1. Fort de Kock

All that remains from the fort are the mound and some cannons. The Bukittinggi Regional Government renovated the fort area and it is now part of the Bukittinggi City Park.

  1. Fort Pendem Cilacap

Fort Pendem Cilacap is located on the coast of Teluk Penyu, Cilacap Regency, Central Java Province. This fort is an abandoned Dutch heritage fort that was established in 1861. This fort was covered with coastal sand therefore the Cilacap Regional Government did some restoration works.

Those are some of the historic forts left by the colonial era. Some of the forts are in their original form, while others have collapsed or been buried.
