Hinduism in Indonesia (Nusantara) developed from India since the first century. 3% of the total population of Indonesia practices Hinduism. The majority of Hindus live in Bali Province and others are living in other areas. Here are some Hindu communities based on their regions in Indonesia.
- Bali province
Hindus in Bali practice Hindu Dharma. Hindu Dharma is closely related to art and ritual. Hindu Dharma followers in Bali pray at temples called “pura”. In Bali, several temples are also built in the family house (Sanggah).
- The slopes of Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru
The Hindu community on the slopes of Mount Bromo and Mount Semeru is the Tengger tribe. This area includes Lumajang, Probolinggo, Malang and Pasuruan districts. The Tengger tribe is believed to be a descendant of the Majapahit Kingdom. The Tengger tribe practices Hindu rituals and ceremonies in the Mount Bromo area. They carry out a large ceremony, Yadnya Kasada at Pura Luhur Poten Bromo, at the foot of Mount Bromo once a year.
- Central Sulawesi Province
In the 1960s, there was transmigration program from Bali Province to Central Sulawesi Province. This has resulted in the rapid growth of Hindus in several areas in Central Sulawesi, such as Poso District and Palu City. Generally, these transmigrants cultivated crops and lived in groups to practice Hinduism together.
- Lampung province
There is a large Hindu community in Lampung Province, for example in Central Lampung District. Hindus in Central Lampung District are spread across 23 sub-districts out of a total of 29 sub-districts. The majority of the population is Balinese Hindu, while in 9 sub-districts are Javanese Hindus.
- Kalimantan
In Kalimantan, there are Dayak tribal communities that embrace the Kaharingan belief. Kaharingan means to grow or live. Since April 20, 1980, the Kaharingan belief has been categorized as a branch of Hinduism that it is called the Hindu Kaharingan religion. This place of worship for followers of this religion is called Basarah Hall.

Mayoritas pemeluk agama Hindu tinggal di Provinsi Bali dan sebagian lain tersebar di daerah lainnya. Berikut beberapa komunitas pemeluk agama Hindu berdasarkan wilayahnya di Indonesia.
- Provinsi Bali
Umat Hindu di Bali mempraktikkan agama Hindu Dharma. Agama Hindu Dharma berhubungan erat dengan seni dan ritual. Pemeluk Hindu Dharma di Bali bersembahyang di kuil yang disebut “pura”. Di Bali, beberapa pura juga dibangun di rumah keluarga (Sanggah).
- Lereng Gunung Bromo dan Gunung Semeru
Komunitas pemeluk agama Hindu di lereng Gunung Bromo dan Gunung Semeru yaitu suku Tengger. Area ini meliputi Kabupaten Lumajang, Probolinggo, Malang, dan Pasuruan. Suku Tengger dipercaya sebagai keturunan Kerajaan Majapahit. Suku Tengger mempraktikkan ritual dan upacara Hindu di area Gunung Bromo. Setahun sekali, suku Tengger melaksanakan upacara besar yaitu upacara Yadnya Kasada di Pura Luhur Poten Bromo, di kaki Gunung Bromo.
- Provinsi Sulawesi Tengah
Pada tahun 1960-an, terjadi transmigrasi dari Provinsi Bali menuju Provinsi Sulawesi Tengah. Hal ini mengakibatkan pertumbuhan pemeluk agama Hindu pesat di beberapa wilayah di Sulawesi Tengah, seperti di Kabupaten Poso dan Kota Palu. Umumnya, para transmigran ini bercocok tanam dan hidup secara berkelompok untuk mempraktikkan agama Hindu bersama-sama.
- Provinsi Lampung
Terdapat komunitas besar pemeluk agama Hindu di Provinsi Lampung, misalnya di Kabupaten Lampung Tengah. Pemeluk agama Hindu di Kabupaten Lampung Tengah tersebar di 23 kecamatan dari total 29 kecamatan. Mayoritas penduduk merupakan pemeluk agama Hindu Bali, sedangkan di 9 kecamatan merupakan pemeluk agama Hindu Jawa.
- Kalimantan
Di Kalimantan, terdapat komunitas suku Dayak yang memeluk kepercayaan Kaharingan. Kaharingan artinya tumbuh atau hidup. Sejak tanggal 20 April 1980, kepercayaan Kaharingan dikategorikan sebagai cabang dari agama Hindu sehingga disebut agama Hindu Kaharingan. Tempat ibadah pemeluk agama ini disebut Balai Basarah.
